Working together to bring bike and pedestrian connections to Longwood Gardens
The study will build upon previous planning efforts and advance the vision for creating bicycle and pedestrian connections that support a sustainable community in the Kennett region. The evaluation will consider users’ experience and identify opportunities to enhance community aesthetics as part of the potential bicycle and pedestrian connections. This project stems from the results of the Chester County Planning Commission’s Southern Chester County Circuit Trail Feasibility Study, which served to better refine and determine the feasibility of constructing community connections in southern Chester County.

Kennett Borough
The study explores connecting Kennett Borough residents to Longwood Gardens, as well as Route 1 businesses, such as Walmart. Visitors to Longwood could easily reach Borough shops, restaurants and amenities without a car.

The Kennett Greenway
By connecting Longwood Gardens and the Route 1 corridor to the Greenway, residents and visitors would be able to enjoy local activities, festivals and 10+ parks and preserves on the Greenway, once it is completed. It would also connect Longwood Gardens to Auburn Valley State Park.

Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway
Just a stone’s throw from Longwood, the study will explore connecting the Brandywine Valley National Scenic Byway to Longwood and the Kennett Area. The byway includes a bikeway that runs up Route 52 from Wilmington, Delaware.

Unionville & Route 82
The study will explore connecting Longwood Gardens and Kennett Borough to Unionville Village and Route 82. The project will build off of bike and pedestrian recommendations in East Marlborough’s 2021 Open Space, Recreation & Environmental Resources Plan.

McMahon Associates, Inc. is serving as the prime consultant and will lead the conceptual evaluation plan. Unknown Studio will support the evaluation of bicycle and pedestrian facilities (particularly relating to Longwood Gardens properties), develop maps and graphics, and assist with public outreach. Biohabitats will also provide support during the public involvement effort as it relates to the Kennett Greenway.
